I selected to update when the volume was dismounted, hoping that it wouldn't pause to rewind until I dismounted the tape, but I didn't notice any difference. It doesn't specify what the default is, but I can override the default and either tell it to update when the volume is dismounted or ever X number of minutes. There's an option in the Tandberg LTFSConfigurator tool to select when the index updates. It seems to me that the drive keeps rewinding to the front to, say, update the index, and then fast-forwards to the current spot to continue on with the next file/batch of files. Other times, though, when I copy multiple files, it will be very fast while it copies that file, then it will pause, and what sounds like a rewind, a pause, a fast-forward (my guessing here, as obviously I don't see which way the tape is moving), and then the next file speeds along, and the process starts all over. Once the drive rewound/fast-forwarded to the correct spot and the copying began, it was very fast, and it didn't pause between files. One strange thing with copying multiple files with Windows Explorer: I selected 40 files totaling 4 GB and dragged and dropped them over to my LTFS tape drive. I only let it go for a few minutes, but the drive really sounded like it was starting and stopping frequently, so I didn't think that I would get a steady transfer stream. It seemed like it was trying to write a chunk of one file, then pause, rewind, write a chunk of another file, etc. I tried using RichCopy and setting it to use 20 file copy threads, but performance with that was especially bad. I could easily have missed that part, though!

So based on my testing and very limited experience, it seems it is NOT good practice to just drag and drop a folder over to a tape, but instead to first zip the collection of files and then copy that one large file.ĭoes this jibe with others' experience using LTFS? I did a bit of research about LTFS prior to buying the drive, and I don't remember seeing people mention or recommend that you really should zip the files prior to transferring them over to tape. No shoe-shining whatsoever - a fast consistent transfer rate.

I have experimented with copying an 80 GB zip file to the tape, and it worked well. Copy speeds would briefly be very fast (170 MB/s), and then ultimately drop down to 0 briefly as the tape must have rewound or fast-forwarded itself, and then the speeds would go back up, come back down, and the process continued. The shoe-shining that I was experiencing was from copying a bunch of files from Windows Explorer over to my tape drive.

From what I can ascertain now, I don't think I have any kind of hardware or configuration problem. I initially thought perhaps my SAS card was not up to the task (I started this thread). I'm experimenting with different methods of file copying to see what gives me the best results.
